Floribunda Roses PDF Print E-mail

“Floribunda” is a Latin word which means “many flowered” or “abundance of flowers”. Given this definition, the Floribunda definitely lives up to its name. Described as one of the most vibrant types of roses of recent time, its flowers normally grow low and in huge clusters. The Floribunda rose was developed as a cross breed between Hybrid Tea and Polyantha,  in the ‘20s. Many consider Floribunda as superior to Hybrid Tea as it produces many blooms round the year which survive all the seasons. Excellent for display rather than using as cut-flowers, Floribunda adds color and value to any garden. It is a beautiful landscape plant.

Keeping with the tradition of its ancestors, Floribundas grow in a large variety of colors and styles. The only difference between Floribunda and Hybrid Tea roses is that the former is far tougher and hardier. It can grow up to four feet from the ground. Another variety of rose plant of similar size, which has gained tremendous popularity recently is the Rob Roy. Deep red in color its flowers emit a soft scent which is most appealing. There is a continuous bloom which start from spring and carries on till late fall, unless of course there is some severe frost. They are excellent for planting in large quantities.

There are a few important steps to follow before you start to plant your rose plants. After you choose the particular garden location, make your soil ready by adding  a compost of manure or any other effective organic matter. To make your roses bloom, remember that a few inches of organic mulch is a must. Also plant your flowers at least 18 to 24 inches apart so that you give enough room for each one to grow healthily.

Then dig a hole that is 8 to 10 inches deep so that roots can grow without any hindrance. High in phosphate content is bone meal, which you may add to the soil. This is when you are ready for planting. Take out the plant from its plastic container and place it firmly into the ground. Fill the hole with soil and stuff any loose soil gently but firmly with your hands. After the planting is complete, water your plants. Initially, for a couple of weeks water your plants daily. Subsequently, you can water the plants on a weekly basis.

Undertake any basic pruning during the late winter months. Some choose January or February, depending on the climate. All debris, rubbish and dead leaves must be removed and the flower beds cleaned properly. The dead canes must be clipped, old flowers removed to make way for the new bloom of the season.

While you are cutting and pruning the rose plants, to maintain its shape, go gentle. According to many horticulturists, Floribundas which are less than a year old, grow very well with a cane length of 6 inches. You can add  fertilizers to the soil during the time when its warmer. Use organic matter judiciously and watch your Floribundas flourish wonderfully in the coming months.
